Summary
- Orphanage established in 1964, now outgrown its capacity.
- New facility will feature modern enclosures and a veterinary unit.
- Relocation to create over 500 new jobs for Kenyans.

The Nairobi Animal Orphanage, founded in 1964, is undergoing a significant relocation and upgrade to enhance wildlife welfare and conservation capacity within Nairobi National Park. The existing facility, operational for over six decades, has become constrained by growing visitor numbers and demand for rescue services, alongside advancements in international animal welfare standards.
The Kenya Wildlife Service stated the initiative is designed to improve animal welfare, conservation education, and visitor experience. The new complex will boast larger, more natural enclosures, a fully equipped veterinary unit with surgical capabilities, and dedicated nursery spaces for rescued animals.
Furthermore, the upgraded site will support rewilding efforts with designated release areas and improve visitor amenities. The project is also projected to generate more than 500 direct employment opportunities for Kenyans. The old orphanage site will be restored to bolster the park's ecological health.
