NGT Slams Authorities Over Lake Pollution
29 Apr
Summary
- Tribunal questions incomplete pollution mitigation plans.
- Sewage and waste dumped directly into Nainital Lake.
- Authorities given two months for detailed response.

The principal bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed concern over the ongoing pollution of Nainital Lake, noting deficiencies in the environmental mitigation efforts presented by state authorities. The tribunal observed that an additional affidavit lacked complete information regarding proposed projects to address the lake's degradation.
Petitioners previously submitted a complaint on October 14, 2024, alleging that large quantities of untreated sewage, garbage, and plastic waste are being discharged into the lake through a drain. This contamination directly impacts aquatic life, the surrounding ecosystem, and the quality of drinking water for Nainital residents.
The NGT has granted the state authorities two months to file a detailed response outlining planned or implemented remediation measures. The tribunal also directed the principal chief conservator of forests to be impleaded as a respondent, deeming their presence necessary for the case's adjudication. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 14.
