Mumbai Societies Get Tax Breaks for Waste Processing
2 Aug
Summary
- Mumbai launches decentralised waste processing to cut landfill dependence.
- Societies processing wet waste on-site may get 15% property tax rebate.
- BMC seeks agencies to help bulk generators set up waste processing units.
Mumbai's Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a mission to decentralise waste processing, aligning with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. This strategy aims to significantly decrease the city's reliance on landfills and reduce long-distance garbage transportation.
The BMC is actively inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified agencies to support Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) in establishing and managing on-site waste processing systems. The goal is to ensure biodegradable waste is processed at its source, while dry waste is directed to authorized recyclers.
To incentivize participation, housing societies that successfully process wet waste on their premises and comply with BMC guidelines can qualify for a property tax rebate of up to 15%. This initiative is projected to cut waste transportation costs, enhance segregation and recycling rates, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The BMC has identified 3,177 BWGs, with 2,025 already registered. The tender documents for interested third-party agencies will be available from August 1, with EOI submissions due by August 14. This approach is expected to alleviate the strain on the city's waste management infrastructure and foster a circular economy.
A BMC official emphasized that future waste management success lies in processing waste where it is generated, urging widespread adoption of the new initiative.
