₹20 Crore for SGNP Tunnel Project: Wildlife Safety First
13 Mar
Summary
- ₹20 crore allocated for wildlife safety near GMLR tunnel.
- Funds will support conservation and plantation within SGNP.
- Project ensures no direct intervention within protected forest area.

Mumbai's Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) tunnel project has allocated ₹20 crore towards wildlife conservation and conflict prevention within Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). This funding, approved by the BMC's standing committee, adheres to conditions set during the project's environmental clearance.
The funds will support a detailed wildlife conservation and plantation plan approved by the State Chief Wildlife Warden. This initiative aims to enhance conservation activities within the protected area, potentially improving tree survival rates compared to standard compensatory plantations.
Measures outlined in the plan include fencing, improved signage, veterinary teams, and artificial pond creation. The project, which began in November 2023, will feature a 5.30-km twin tunnel passing beneath SGNP, with work expected to conclude by October 2028. The tunnel's alignment ensures it remains over 600 metres from the forest boundary before entering SGNP underground, thus avoiding direct impact on the protected forest area.
