10 Oct
Summary
- Four snakes and a monitor lizard were rescued.
- Rescues occurred in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai areas.
- Habitat destruction is forcing reptiles into urban zones.
In a recent 72-hour period, wildlife rescue teams successfully saved four snakes and a monitor lizard from various locations in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. These rescues highlight the increasing conflict between urban development and wildlife.
The operation involved retrieving a five-foot-long Indian spectacled cobra near the Airoli toll plaza and three Indian rock pythons from Powai, Gandhinagar, and Vikhroli. A monitor lizard was also safely recovered from a residential area in Powai.
Animal welfare organizations attribute the surge in reptile appearances in urban settings to the ongoing destruction of green spaces and development projects. These activities displace wildlife, forcing them into closer proximity with human populations.
Experts from PAWS-Mumbai and other collaborating groups emphasized the importance of contacting trained professionals or the Forest Department immediately upon encountering a distressed animal. They strongly advised against any attempts by the public to handle or capture snakes, ensuring both human and animal safety.
