BMC Launches Urgent Audit of Mumbai Waste Facilities
15 Jul
Summary
- Mumbai's landfills and waste facilities will undergo a safety audit.
- The audit follows a deadly waste-to-energy plant collapse in Pune.
- Authorities will inspect structural stability and excavation zones.

Mumbai's civic body is initiating a comprehensive safety audit of its landfills and waste management facilities. This proactive measure follows a tragic incident where a waste-to-energy plant building collapsed in Moshi, Pune, resulting in nine fatalities. The audit, scheduled to begin this week, will scrutinize safety norms across all solid waste management project sites in Mumbai.
Authorities will specifically examine the heights of legacy waste mounds, identify and secure unstable excavation zones, and assess the structural stability of various facilities within landfill cells. The inspection will cover active dumping grounds in Kanjurmarg and Deonar, as well as the closed Mulund landfill where bio-mining is underway.
Further, officials have been directed to review fire and methane gas risks at the Deonar waste-to-energy facility and conduct mock drills for project staff. Contractors are urged to stay vigilant for potential fire hazards from RDF accumulation. The BMC also plans a thorough audit of storm water and drainage systems to ensure readiness for the monsoon season.
