Mumbai's Water Future: Desalination Plant Gets Green Light
28 Apr
Summary
- BMC's desalination plant received CRZ clearance from the Union ministry.
- Project requires research on brine's marine impact and advanced techniques.
- Fishing activities in Manori Creek are restricted due to the project.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has obtained essential Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearance for its 400 MLD seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant. This approval from the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) removes a major hurdle for the project.
As part of the clearance conditions, research on the long-term impact of brine on marine ecosystems is mandated. Capable research institutions will develop action plans for assessing ecological effects, improving desalination techniques, and exploring brine reuse. An initial Rs 10 crore has been allocated for these research projects.
