Mumbai Battles Air Pollution: Strict Enforcement Underway

As Mumbai's air quality deteriorates, the civic administration has launched an intensified enforcement drive. Between December 29, 2025, and January 13, 2026, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued 409 show cause notices and 284 stop work notices to construction sites violating air pollution guidelines. This action comes after the Bombay High Court reprimanded the BMC for its response to the crisis.
The BMC has operationalized an action plan, including daily inspections by 94 ward-level squads. A central monitoring system visualizes air quality data from construction sites, where 1,292 sensor-based air quality monitors are installed. Additionally, a deep-cleaning drive for roads and public spaces is underway, employing numerous water tankers to suppress dust.
The enforcement extends to bakeries, with notices issued for transitioning to cleaner fuels, and strengthened checks on commercial vehicles, construction debris transport, and vehicle emissions. The BMC aims to address the seasonal air pollution pattern, which peaks from November to March, through these comprehensive measures.
