AI cameras to catch litterbugs with loud warnings

Summary

  • AI cameras with loudspeakers are being tested to deter littering.
  • Unauthorised dumping triggers alarms and potential heavy fines.
  • The pilot project is targeting garbage vulnerable points in Mumbai.

In a novel pilot project, Mumbai is deploying AI cameras with integrated loudspeakers to deter littering in public spaces. This system is designed to detect individuals approaching to dump garbage and immediately issue a loud warning via the loudspeaker, urging them to keep the area clean.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) installed the first such camera in Mahim's Gajanan Vatika, identified as a garbage vulnerable point (GVP) prone to chronic waste dumping. This initiative aims to address the persistent issue of GVPs, which are legacy hotspots where waste accumulates due to frequent dumping and often cannot be accessed by collection vehicles.

Senior civic officials have indicated that repeat offenders who ignore the AI warnings and continue to dump waste openly will be subject to heavy fines. The G/North ward, where the pilot is underway, was selected due to its high concentration of identified GVPs.

This AI camera deployment is part of BMC's comprehensive strategy to eliminate GVPs. The plan includes installing CCTV cameras across numerous GVPs, enhancing waste collection services, and implementing behavioural change campaigns. So far, CCTV cameras have been deployed at 134 GVPs, and analysis of service enhancements has led to the elimination of 102 chronic dumping sites in recent months.
