Lizard Smugglers Caught with Rare Reptiles
14 Oct
Summary
- Eighteen monitor lizards were seized from a bus.
- Three individuals arrested in connection with wildlife smuggling.
- A sack of medicinal shatavari plant also recovered.
In a significant wildlife bust, forest department officials in Sikar district, Rajasthan, intercepted a bus on the Ajitgarh-Makrana route. The operation led to the seizure of 18 monitor lizards, packed discreetly in two sacks. The accused were also found with a sack of shatavari, a valuable medicinal plant, highlighting a dual smuggling operation.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, while one juvenile was detained. The arrested smugglers were identified as residents of Nagaur district and other nearby areas. This action was a result of a strategic blockade set up near the Shrimadhopur forest range office.
Authorities are now working diligently to trace the origin of the seized monitor lizards and determine their intended destination. The investigation aims to uncover if this seizure is part of a larger, more extensive wildlife smuggling syndicate operating in the region.
