Wildfire Fears: Nature Group vs. MOD on Range Safety
17 Aug
Summary
- A nature group urges the MOD to increase wildfire protection measures.
- Three fires occurred at Middlewick Ranges this summer.
- Improved access for firefighters and better gorse management are requested.

A nature group is pressing the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to implement stronger wildfire prevention strategies at Middlewick Ranges. Colchester Natural History Society chairman Dougal Urquhart expressed concerns that current MOD efforts are insufficient, increasing the risk of further wildfires. This past summer, the MOD-owned site experienced three fires within a four-day period. Urquhart pointed to uncollected grass cuttings and the need for more firebreaks amidst highly flammable gorse bushes, advocating for better management of the rapidly growing vegetation. He also stressed the importance of clearer gate labelling and widened access tracks for firefighters. The MOD stated it facilitates prompt access for emergency services, allowing them to cut chains if necessary, and refuted claims about unmanaged grass cuttings. They noted grass cutting is planned and adjusted due to ground-nesting birds. The cause of the recent fires is currently unknown, with Essex Fire and Rescue working with local authorities and the MOD to mitigate risks.
