PFAS Contamination: Minnesota Waterways Tainted
15 Oct
Summary
- All 91 tested Minnesota waterways show PFAS contamination.
- PFAS exposure health risks include cancer and fertility issues.
- 3M knew about PFAS dangers since 1975, settlement reached in 2024.

A recent study revealed that all 91 waterways tested across Minnesota have tested positive for some level of PFAS contamination. The Environment America Research and Policy Center conducted the testing, highlighting concerns about the widespread presence of these 'forever chemicals.'
Experts warn that PFAS can severely impact human health, leading to issues such as compromised immunity, decreased fertility, developmental delays in children, and an elevated risk of certain cancers. Concerns are particularly high for areas with contamination but no clear identified source.
Discharge of PFAS has been linked to sewage sludge on farmlands and the 3M facility in Hastings. In 2024, 3M agreed to a multi-billion dollar nationwide settlement related to PFAS water pollution. Former employees indicated the company was aware of PFAS dangers as early as 1975, with manufacturing discontinuing in 2022 and all usage ceasing last year.
