- A design contest for new state park plates is mandated by legislation.

Minnesotans who cherish the state's natural beauty may soon have a license plate to match their passion. Legislation enacted in 2024 mandates that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold a design contest for its new state park plates. Representative David Gottfried, DFL-Shoreview, has championed an amendment to ensure the winning design celebrates the North Shore and the iconic Lake Superior agate.
Lars Leafblad of Shoreview brought the idea to Gottfried, expressing a long-held desire to see the state gemstone represented on official plates. Leafblad, who has fond memories of searching for agates along Lake Superior with family, found support for his proposal. The amendment, presented in March, sailed through committee review, with a companion bill also advancing in the senate. This initiative appears to have broad support, with no opposition voiced thus far.
