On Saturday, Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap inaugurated a special training camp focused on bird monitoring and ringing at Puthalam salt pans. This initiative was jointly organized by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department's Kanniyakumari Wild Life Division and the Migratory Bird Monitoring Trust.
The training camp aims to educate the public about the remarkable journeys of birds migrating from Arctic and European regions to the salt pans within the district. Collector Prathap stressed the critical role of healthy wetland habitats, which serve as vital feeding grounds for these migratory species.
These wetlands provide essential food sources like worms and insects, enabling the birds to regain energy for their extensive return voyages. Evidence from the bird ringing program has shown that birds tagged in Puthalam have been observed in distant locations including England, Poland, and Russia. This underscores the necessity of continuous protection for habitats like salt marshes and the international significance of Kanniyakumari's wetlands as a key transit point for these traveling avian populations.
