Mutant Midges Trap Brazilians Indoors

Residents in Ilhota, Brazil, are enduring a harsh midge infestation, forcing them to remain indoors. The insects, identified as maruim, transmit diseases such as Oropouche fever, a serious illness with dengue-like symptoms. Daily life has become difficult, with individuals compelled to stay inside and cover all skin, even in intense heat.

Municipal officials have acknowledged a deficiency in specialized products required for controlling the maruim population, which has consequently surged. This issue is also affecting the neighboring Luiz Alves municipality. While Luiz Alves employs a biological larvicide for other midge types, it has not yet been applied to combat the maruim.

The consequences of this outbreak are severe, impacting vulnerable individuals like cancer patients who are advised to seek sunlight but cannot due to the infestation. Previous outbreaks have tragically resulted in fetal deaths, highlighting the extreme danger posed by these insects, especially to pregnant women.
