Microplastics: You Eat Thousands Annually!
18 Feb
Summary
- Adults ingest 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles yearly.
- Microplastics found in blood, organs, soil, oceans, and air.
- Indoor microplastic pollution is double outdoor levels.

Adults are unknowingly consuming between 39,000 and 52,000 microplastic particles annually, according to data presented during a recent awareness drive. These particles, ranging from nanometers to millimeters, stem from manufactured goods and the breakdown of larger plastic items. They have been detected in human blood and organs, as well as in soil, oceans, and the atmosphere.
Microplastics pose significant health risks due to their non-degradable nature. They are linked to respiratory problems, weakened immune systems, and hormonal disturbances. Experts recommend reducing plastic use by banning single-use items and switching kitchenware to alternatives like steel or earthenware.
Furthermore, indoor microplastic pollution levels have been found to be twice as high as those detected outdoors. Simple measures such as regular dusting, maintaining home ventilation, and using wet cloths for cleaning can help mitigate these invisible threats. The use of cloth bags and cotton clothing for infants is also advised to reduce exposure.
