Michigan Chokes on Smoke: Air Quality Alert Hits Record Streak

Michigan is currently experiencing a historic stretch of poor air quality, marked by a sixth consecutive day of statewide air quality alerts. This persistent issue is caused by wildfire smoke originating from Canada and, to a lesser extent, Minnesota. The situation escalated dramatically on July 16 and 17, when air quality in Metro Detroit was recorded as some of the worst worldwide.

This prolonged period of unhealthy air has led to widespread disruptions, including the cancellation and rescheduling of outdoor events, summer camps, and school activities. State officials acknowledge their inability to directly control the smoke but are collaborating to provide residents with timely information on protecting themselves. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, alongside other state agencies, is actively working to keep the public informed about current conditions and necessary precautions.
