Scorching Miami: Heatwaves strain vulnerable neighborhoods

Miami is currently grappling with an intense summer heatwave, disproportionately impacting residents in underserved neighborhoods. Many are struggling to keep their homes cool amidst soaring temperatures and rising energy costs. Debra Davis, a 73-year-old Overtown resident, shared her experience of using multiple fans to supplement her air conditioning, comparing the situation to torture. The financial burden of cooling homes is significant, with electricity costs rising nationally by nearly 6% over the past year. Glennesha Campbell, an Overtown community advocate, noted a $100 monthly increase in her own utility bill.

Organizations like Catalyst Miami are collaborating with the city to quantify the health effects of this extreme heat on vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and pregnant individuals. Data from sensors placed in homes across Overtown, Little Haiti, and Liberty City are being reviewed. Nicole Crooks of Catalyst Miami highlighted how ongoing development in these areas is further intensifying the heat index. The project aims to implement solutions such as increasing green spaces and tree canopy, alongside improving access to solar energy for these communities.
