In Puebla state, Mexico, a social enterprise named EcoDom has pioneered a method to convert approximately five and a half tonnes of plastic waste each day into robust building materials. This innovative process, established in 2013, involves melting discarded plastic bottles and toys to create strong wall and roofing panels. EcoDom's initiative aims to address both the critical shortage of affordable housing and the pervasive issue of plastic pollution.
Developed by Carlos Daniel González, the system sorts and heats plastics to 350 degrees Celsius before compressing them into panels measuring 2.4 meters by 1.2 meters. These panels are used to construct homes, with a 40-square-meter dwelling requiring 80 panels. A complete two-room house can be built in just seven days using two tons of recycled plastic, offering a durable, warm, and environmentally friendly housing solution that can last a century.
EcoDom actively partners with local governments and NGOs to supply its panels for subsidized social housing programs. Roof panels cost approximately $33, exterior wall panels $36, and interior panels $28. Eligible low-income families can acquire a finished two-room home for about $280 through municipal housing programs. Projects have included building 500 room extensions in Huauchinango and constructing 150 homes each in Chiconcuautla and Pahuatlán.
Furthermore, EcoDom has created a new supply chain that significantly benefits informal waste collectors. By offering substantially higher prices per kilogram of plastic, the company has nearly doubled the earnings for some collectors, ensuring a consistent supply of raw materials while diverting waste from landfills and waterways. This initiative addresses the global challenge of plastic waste, where only a small fraction is recycled.
