£1M Boost for Mersey Valley Bird Habitats
22 Feb
Summary
- A 13-mile walk along the River Mersey receives £1m in funding.
- The investment will protect nesting Willow Tits, a species at risk.
- Improvements include woodland management and path renewals.

A £1 million cash injection is set to transform the Mersey Valley walking path, a 13-mile stretch along the River Mersey connecting Stockport, Manchester, and Trafford. This vital funding will be dedicated to conserving rare nesting birds, specifically the Willow Tit, whose populations have dramatically declined in the UK.
The Mersey Valley route, already traversing notable areas like Fletcher Moss Gardens and Kenworthy Woods, will undergo substantial improvements. These include enhanced woodland management to boost biodiversity and targeted restoration of Willow Tit habitats, focusing on decaying trees crucial for their nesting.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins highlighted the project's dual benefit: improving access for residents and safeguarding the local environment. Renewed paths and updated signage will encourage greater community engagement with the natural surroundings, emphasizing the positive impact of nature on health and wellbeing.
