A public information session will be held on August 26th in Toledo to discuss the Lower Maumee River Sediment Remediation Project. Attendees will receive updates on the project's current status and review planned cleanup efforts for contaminated sediment.
The remediation targets two key locations: the eastern side of the Sway Bridge and an area near the Toledo Water Reclamation Facility. This extensive cleanup will address 42 acres of the riverbed.
This project is part of a larger effort within the Maumee Area of Concern, designated by the U.S. EPA as a priority for restoration in the Great Lakes region. Cleanup work at the Sway Bridge site is slated to commence in 2027.
The initiative is a collaboration between the U.S. EPA Great Lakes National Program Office, Ohio EPA, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, the City of Toledo, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District. Funding is being managed through a cooperative agreement.
