Masinagudi Businesses Protest Ghat Road Tourist Ban
10 Jul
Summary
- Masinagudi businesses protested the imminent closure of Kalhatty Ghat Road.
- The Madras High Court ordered a status report on tourist traffic.
- Conservationists cite increased roadkills and wildlife disturbance.

Businesses and safari operators in Masinagudi, located within the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, staged a protest on July 10, 2026, against the planned closure of the Kalhatty Ghat Road to tourists. The Madras High Court recently directed the state government to submit a status report regarding tourist access on this road, pending further orders. Tourist vehicles are already barred from descending the ghat, while local vehicles have limited access.
Conservationists have been advocating for years to regulate the increasing traffic on Kalhatty Ghat Road, citing a rise in roadkills and disturbances to wildlife, including leopards, langurs, and striped hyenas. A Forest Department official noted a reduction in plastic waste and wildlife disturbance during previous closures, particularly during peak tourist seasons. Tribal community elders stated they neither benefited nor were harmed by current eco-tourism, suggesting preference for Adivasi communities in operating safari vehicles.
The court also mandated stricter regulation of private safaris, with checkposts to be established to monitor operators who have been filmed disturbing wildlife. The Nilgiris Collector believes the new rules will positively impact vehicle safari operators by potentially increasing demand. Tourist vehicles will still be permitted up to Masinagudi and Mavanallah via Gudalur, ensuring continued business for resorts and homestays.
