This Saturday, June 13, the Maryland Zoo will open its doors to two new female red pandas, marking the debut of a new species and habitat. The exhibit, located near the historic Round Cage, represents the first new animal habitat in over 30 years at the facility.
Zoo President & CEO Kirby Fowler expressed excitement, calling the habitat a "seismic improvement." The red pandas, charismatic and dynamic, will be among the first sights for visitors entering Main Valley. This significant development promises an engaging new experience for zoo-goers.
The specially designed habitat boasts impressive features, including extensive climbing structures, a soothing waterfall, and a refreshing pool. Additionally, the logs within the enclosure are equipped with air conditioning, ensuring the comfort of the red pandas. These animals are not bears but were named 'panda' decades before the larger black and white species.
