Chennai Clears Marina Beach for Blue Flag Upgrade
12 Jan
Summary
- Shops removed from Marina beach for Blue Flag certification.
- Second phase of Blue Flag beach aims for over 50 acres.
- Polluted seawater delays Marina beach's Blue Flag status.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has intensified efforts to clear Marina beach for the second phase of its Blue Flag certification drive. On Sunday, 28 shops were removed from the designated area, which is set to encompass over 50 acres with a strict no-vending policy. This phase aims to enhance the beach's appeal and meet international standards.
While beautification work, including children's play equipment installation, is underway, the beach's Blue Flag certification remains delayed. Experts cite polluted seawater, stemming from untreated sewage and industrial waste in the Cooum and Adyar rivers, as the primary obstacle. The state government's allocation of funds for adequate sewage treatment plants is reportedly insufficient.
Residents have voiced their concerns online, calling for similar clean-up drives on other city beaches like Besant Nagar. The Corporation has announced plans to resume work on umbrellas and recliners after Pongal and will levy a ₹5000 fine for littering. The civic body is committed to improving beach aesthetics and cleanliness to secure the Blue Flag status.
