Summary
- TN-SHORE project to afforest 2,500 hectares.
- Kanniyakumari mangroves vital for aquatic species and birds.
- Restoration to benefit fishing communities and coastal livelihoods.

Under the new TN-SHORE project, the state government is launching a significant mangrove afforestation and restoration initiative. This program is slated to cover 2,500 hectares across eight districts, with a particular focus on Kanniyakumari.
In Kanniyakumari district, the project targets mangrove ecosystems in Manakudy and Rajakkamangalam. These areas are crucial habitats supporting diverse aquatic species and serving as a refuge for various bird populations.
The initiative aims to expand existing mangrove cover by planting along newly created channels within the wetlands. This approach will help strengthen these vital ecosystems.
Restoring these mangrove forests will directly benefit the local fishing community. It will enhance breeding and nursery habitats for fish and crabs, thereby bolstering coastal livelihoods and improving ecosystem resilience against environmental changes.
