Summary
- Mangaluru plans ₹1,250 crore drainage upgrade pending government approval.
- Sewage treatment plants to be upgraded for secondary treatment.
- New water line planned to meet 2051 population needs.

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is preparing for a significant ₹1,250 crore rehabilitation of the city's underground drainage system, awaiting government sanction. This extensive project aims to address aging infrastructure, with much of the current system dating back to the 1960s and covering only 65% of the city.
Concurrently, the MCC intends to upgrade two sewage treatment plants (STPs) at Bajal and Pachhanady to perform secondary treatment, costing approximately ₹50 lakh each. This upgrade is crucial to prevent raw sewage from polluting river systems. The Kavoor STP, currently treating 26 MLD against its 45 MLD capacity, may receive sewage from Pachhanady via a proposed ₹25 crore pipeline.
In anticipation of the projected population in 2051, the corporation is also planning a new 125 MLD water supply line from the Adyar vented dam. This initiative addresses the aging 80 MLD pipeline and aims to ensure adequate water distribution across the city's wards.
Furthermore, the MCC is prioritizing solid waste management by expediting the clearing of legacy waste at the Pachhanady dumping yard and improving door-to-door waste collection services.
