- Urbanisation threatens vital natural habitats in Mangaluru.

During a recent bird count, fifteen members of the 'Kudla Birders' group documented an impressive 73 bird species in the wetlands of Manjalpaade and Bondel, Mangaluru. This citizen-science initiative, organized as part of the Karnataka Rajyotsava Bird Count 2026, aimed to highlight the region's rich avian diversity.
Notable sightings included endemic species such as the Grey-headed Bulbul and Malabar Flameback, alongside raptors like the Western Marsh-Harrier and Changeable Hawk-Eagle. The event was coordinated by Deepika Prasad, M. Vivek, and Rohit S. Rao, with Mr. Rao, a long-time observer of the area, leading the walk.
Mr. Rao expressed concern over the increasing pressure from urbanisation, trespassing, and littering on Mangaluru's natural habitats like Manjalpaade. He stressed the urgent need for public awareness and collective action to protect these ecologically important urban forest patches and wetlands for future generations.
