Majuli Island is grappling with a significant ecological tragedy after more than 50 migratory birds were found dead on Republic Day. Officials strongly suspect deliberate poisoning, sparking a swift police operation.
Authorities detained 17 individuals, including four women, in connection with the incident. Following extensive questioning, Kalim Uddin from Barpeta district was arrested as the primary suspect. Duck feathers and pesticides like Furadon were reportedly recovered from those detained.
Eight birds found alive and in distress were rescued and transported to Ratanpur Veterinary Hospital for urgent treatment. Investigators believe the birds were targeted while foraging in agricultural fields and wetlands across several villages.
