Mahabaleshwar Tackles Tourist Waste With New Facility
17 Oct
Summary
- A new facility can process seven tonnes of dry waste daily.
- Project aims to clear years of accumulated legacy waste.
- Horse manure is a significant waste stream still needing a solution.
Mahabaleshwar has inaugurated a new waste processing facility to manage the significant volume of dry waste generated by tourists. This facility has the capacity to handle seven tonnes of dry waste daily, including plastics and cardboard, which are segregated and sent for recycling. The initiative is a crucial step towards combating pollution and improving the environmental health of the popular hill station.
The project stems from a realization that periodic clean-up drives were insufficient. A collaborative effort involving the Swachh Mahabaleshwar initiative, the Mahabaleshwar Municipal Council, and corporate funding from JSW Foundation led to the establishment of this permanent waste management system. The facility is also working to clear legacy waste accumulated over years.
Biomining techniques are being employed to process older waste, with plans to use windrow composting and mechanical composting for wet waste. While tourist viewpoints are being kept clean with dedicated staff, a solution for processing the estimated three to five tonnes of horse manure generated daily is still under development. The initiative is also expanding its reach to surrounding villages.
