A century-old banyan tree in Madurai, estimated to be 107 years old, stands as the sole survivor of its kind along the Sellur-Kulamangalam road. This ancient tree, once part of a green canopy of several banyans, now faces endangerment due to urban development, including road widening projects that have claimed its companions.
Environmental activists, led by R Abubakkar of Neer Nilagal Padukappu Iyakkam, have organized birthday celebrations for the banyan tree since 2019. These events, held around late July, aim to foster urban conservation awareness among the youth. Children recently participated in a 'Green Nature Festival,' cutting a cake and taking eco-pledges.
Despite its age and ecological importance as a habitat for birds like crows, pigeons, and cuckoos, the tree is under pressure. Garbage is frequently dumped and burned at its base, and power department activities necessitate pruning of its large branches. These celebrations serve as a crucial reminder of the city's natural heritage and a call to action for its preservation.
