Borewell Repairs to Ease Madurai's Water Woes
28 Aug
Summary
- Lack of rain has severely impacted water supply projects in Madurai.
- Residents face increased costs from private water suppliers due to shortages.
- Corporation allocates over Rs 95 lakh for borewell repair and rejuvenation.

Madurai is grappling with a severe water shortage, primarily due to a lack of rainfall impacting crucial supply projects. Areas including Avaniyapuram, Melakkal, and Kochadai are experiencing irregular water distribution, with residents receiving water only once every two to three days.
This scarcity has led to a dependency on costly private water suppliers, with monthly expenses for tankers ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 500. Some private suppliers have even increased their prices. The Madurai corporation has responded by allocating Rs 95.52 lakh from the SDRF drought mitigation budget for 2026-2027 to repair and rejuvenate borewells across affected localities.
Specific funds have been earmarked for maintenance in Kochadai (Rs 33.65 lakh), Melakkal (Rs 21.53 lakh), and Avaniyapuram (Rs 37.68 lakh). Additionally, Rs 2.66 lakh is designated for operational hydrants. Officials expect these measures to stabilize water supply, with future rainfall expected to further replenish groundwater, reducing reliance on pipelines and mitigating shortages next year. Water tankers are also on standby.
