Madurai's Streets Flooded by Wandering Cattle
29 Jun
Summary
- Stray cattle disrupt Madurai markets, consuming produce and leaving dung.
- Cattle block traffic and disturb peace, especially during peak hours.
- Corporation's pound project stalled; cattle catching drives continue.

Madurai city is facing a growing problem with stray cattle roaming freely on its streets and in market areas. Vendors are particularly concerned as these animals often feed on displayed fruits and vegetables, while their dung adds to the general nuisance. The presence of cattle on roads, especially during peak traffic hours, leads to significant blockages and disturbances.
Although the Madurai corporation had plans to establish a new pound, work has been delayed, and the intended site is currently being used as a makeshift shelter. In response, officials have intensified cattle catching operations across the city, apprehending numerous stray cattle and calves in recent weeks. Captured animals are being temporarily held at the existing corporation pound in Sellur, with non-compliant owners facing escalating fines and potential transfer of their cattle to facilities in Tenkasi.
