13 Jul
Summary
- Madurai corporation is repairing pumping station motors to fix sewage overflows.
- Decades-old pipelines are failing to handle the city's growing population.
- A Rs 39 lakh project to repair submersible motors is underway.

Madurai residents have voiced growing concerns over repeated sewage overflows plaguing various city zones. Despite ongoing efforts to clear blockages, the problem persists, leading locals to demand a comprehensive overhaul of the aging sewage system. Many pipelines are reportedly decades old, some even dating back to the colonial era, proving inadequate for Madurai's increasing population.
A senior corporation official acknowledged the severity of the issue, stating that surveys are currently being conducted to identify and replace faulty pipelines. This proactive measure aims to significantly reduce sewage overflows. Low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable, especially during rainfall, which can infiltrate manholes and open channels, disrupting the underground drainage system and causing pipe bursts or severe blockages.
In addition to long-term system upgrades, the corporation is focusing on immediate maintenance. A project to repair submersible motors at pumping stations is actively underway in areas including Aruldosspuram, Palanganatham, Jaihindpuram, and Muniyandipuram, spanning zones 1, 2, and 5. This repair initiative is budgeted at approximately Rs 39 lakh and is anticipated to be completed by the end of August.
