Madurai Residents Tackle Waste Crisis Head-On
1 Sep
Summary
- Community association organized bimonthly dry waste collection.
- Approximately 500kg of non-biodegradable waste was gathered.
- Residents educated on mandatory four-category waste segregation.

Residents of Gomathipuram Thendral Nagar in Madurai have initiated a community-led waste segregation program, setting a precedent for local welfare associations. This proactive approach saw the successful collection of approximately 500kg of non-biodegradable waste during a recent bimonthly drive.
Led by social activist Mahamayan, the effort involved direct door-to-door collection, with the gathered waste being transported to a private garbage bank in Madurai for proper processing and disposal. Association president D Raghavan and other members conducted public outreach to inform residents about the new waste management practices.
Participants were educated on the necessity of segregating waste into four distinct categories before collection. Raghavan highlighted the severe environmental risks posed by improperly discarded non-biodegradable materials, such as packaging, to water systems and vegetation. He indicated that such drives would continue to support sanitation workers even after source segregation becomes mandatory.
