The highly anticipated PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail in Madeira will reopen in April, marking its return after a two-year closure. The wildfire that occurred in 2024 necessitated significant restoration and safety upgrades to the 7km route.
This stunning trail traverses Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres, and Pico Ruivo, offering hikers a unique experience through volcanic rock tunnels and cloud-level viewpoints. The Central Mountain Massif, a protected area with unique biodiversity, is also part of the trek.
In conjunction with the reopening, a new access fee of €10.50 will be implemented for the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, differing from the €4.50 fee for other routes. These contributions will fund essential trail maintenance, safety enhancements, and environmental conservation.
Regulations introduced on January 1, 2026, aim to protect ecosystems and improve visitor experience by staggering access. Madeira's residents are exempt but require pre-registration. The reopening coincides with the Madeira Island Ultra Trail running challenge on April 25-26, 2026.
