Sewage Floods Ludhiana Dairy, Farmers Block Road
2 Jun
Summary
- Dairy farmers protested failing municipal sewerage by blocking Hambran Road.
- Raw sewage and animal waste flooded streets in the Haibowal dairy complex.
- Officials promised to clear blockages within one week after negotiations.

Dairy farmers in Ludhiana initiated a significant three-hour protest on Monday, blocking the major transport artery of Hambran Road. They used carts laden with cow dung to express their anger over a failing municipal sewerage system. This demonstration brought to light a growing public health concern within the Haibowal dairy complex.
Streets in the complex were inundated with raw sewage and animal waste, creating a critical hygiene issue for the city's primary milk source. Farmers argued that local authorities had neglected past promises to resolve the choked infrastructure, while also penalizing agricultural operations.
The blockade, which began at 10 am, caused extensive traffic delays. It was eventually lifted around 1 pm after negotiations with Jasdev Sekhon, the municipal corporation's zonal commissioner. An agreement was reached for the primary drain blockage to be cleared within one week.
As part of the resolution, officials committed to arranging a meeting between the dairy farmers and environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal. They also plan to install digital water flow meters at select dairy units. However, a key road to the effluent treatment plant remains submerged, raising concerns about potential milk contamination.
