Ludhiana Heat: Bus Stand Water Coolers Fail Passengers
8 Jun
Summary
- Ludhiana bus stand water coolers are non-functional or poorly maintained.
- Commuters face distress due to inadequate chilled drinking water.
- Washroom user fees allegedly overcharged by ₹5 at the bus stand.

Ludhiana is currently experiencing intense heat, with temperatures reaching approximately 42°C. Passengers at the city's primary bus stand have voiced significant concerns regarding the availability and condition of drinking water facilities. Multiple water coolers are reportedly out of service, poorly maintained, or failing to dispense sufficiently chilled water.
This lack of basic amenities is particularly troubling for commuters needing hydration to combat heat-related illnesses. Passengers and staff highlight that the existing water coolers are insufficient for the thousands who pass through daily, especially during peak hours. Issues such as unhygienic surroundings and malfunctioning equipment have led to a loss of confidence in the facility.
Commuters like Ranjeet Singh and Jass expressed frustration, noting the presence of foul odors and a general lack of upkeep around the water coolers. Many passengers, including students, laborers, and families with children, find it difficult to access clean and cold drinking water, often having to search multiple locations.
Further complaints include allegations of being overcharged for public washroom usage, with a prescribed fee of ₹5 reportedly being inflated to ₹10. Punjab Roadways General Manager Nawraj Batish acknowledged the need for improvements, stating that an additional water cooler would be installed soon and that investigations would be conducted into the washroom fee issue.
