Lucknow has achieved the number one position in the Clean Air Survey 2026, a remarkable climb from its previous 15th rank. This recognition, awarded by the Central Pollution Control Board, highlights the city's success in improving air quality among municipalities with over one million residents.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) implemented targeted strategies, including road dust suppression, advanced waste management systems, reduced vehicular emissions, and expansion of green spaces. These efforts culminated in the city receiving a ₹1.5 crore award for its environmental stewardship.
Further recognizing specific achievements, Ward 70 in Zone 4 also secured the national first position among wards with over 30,000 inhabitants, earning an additional ₹50 lakh. This highlights a localized success in clean air initiatives.
LMC's comprehensive approach involved deploying 1,100 electric vehicles for waste collection and 97 mechanized sweeping machines for road cleaning. Paving over 559 km of roads and processing 100% of daily waste also contributed significantly. The city now operates 140 electric buses and has developed numerous green spaces and vertical gardens.
