Lucknow Stinks: Festive Season Tarnished by Garbage Crisis
8 Mar
Summary
- Garbage collection falters across Lucknow ahead of festive season.
- Private contractors blamed for irregular door-to-door waste lifting.
- Residents store waste indoors as piles grow on streets.

Garbage collection services have significantly faltered across numerous parts of Lucknow, casting a shadow over the upcoming festive season. Residents are raising concerns about civic negligence and the failure of private contractors to maintain consistent door-to-door waste lifting. Despite assurances from the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) that sanitation services are operating normally, ground conditions reveal missed collection routes and escalating waste accumulation in several neighborhoods.
The disruption has persisted for approximately a month, with conditions deteriorating as temperatures increase. This has heightened concerns regarding potential disease outbreaks and pest infestations. Areas like Jankipuram Vistar, Aliganj, Faizullaganj, Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Alambagh, and Aishbagh have reported uncleared garbage at designated points and along roadsides.
Residents in affected areas, such as Faizullaganj, report that collection vans now visit only once every three to four days, or sometimes not at all. This forces households to store waste inside their homes. The problem is further exacerbated by open dumping, leading to foul odors and unsanitary conditions. Reports from Alambagh and Aishbagh highlight shortages of vehicles and sanitation workers, with promised festive special drives not yet visible. The LMC's environmental officer acknowledged service gaps, stating that route rationalization and vehicle deployment issues are being rectified.
