Summary
- Indian professors developed a smart beehive monitor.
- The device costs only ₹2,000 to build.
- It tracks bee activity, health, and queen's laying habits.

Three professors from India have created a groundbreaking Smart Honeycomb Monitoring Device, dramatically cutting the cost of essential beekeeping technology. This indigenous innovation, designed by Radhakrishna Pandit, Vikram Kakulte, and Balasaheb K Tapale, can be constructed for a mere ₹2,000, a fraction of the $150 (₹14,000) typically spent per hive in Western countries.
The device integrates cameras into a wooden beekeeping box, enabling detailed tracking of bee behavior. It allows for early disease identification, monitoring of the queen bee's health, and assessment of climate impacts on the colony. Beekeepers have found the cameras invaluable for tracking the queen's laying patterns and overall colony health, aiding in hive stability and production.
Prototypes have been tested, showing positive results in understanding colony responses to new environments and food sources. The professors are now seeking financial backing to bring this cost-effective solution to the commercial market, potentially offering vital support to beekeepers facing declining bee populations worldwide.
