Louisiana officials have announced a temporary increase in the recreational red snapper bag limit for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend. Anglers fishing in state waters will be permitted to catch five red snapper per person per day, an increase from the usual limit of four. This measure is intended to allow more people to enjoy outdoor fishing celebrations.
The special limit will be in effect from Thursday through Sunday. Standard size restrictions, requiring red snapper to be a minimum of 16 inches in length, will continue to apply. Louisiana has been granted authority to manage recreational red snapper fishing within its state waters since 2019, with an annual catch limit of 882,000 pounds for this year.
Historically, red snapper populations in the Gulf of Mexico experienced severe overfishing, reaching a low of 2% of healthy levels in the 1990s. Strict management and conservation efforts have since contributed to the species' recovery, and it is no longer considered overfished in U.S. waters.
