Louisiana Fishermen Battle LNG Terminal Over Dredging Damage
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Fishermen say Venture Global's LNG terminal is disrupting and damaging the Calcasieu Lake estuary
- Dredged sediment from the terminal's new ship channel has spilled outside permitted areas
- Fishermen's livelihoods are threatened as oyster beds and crab traps are smothered by the mud

As of September 26th, 2025, a clash is unfolding between Louisiana's seafood and fossil fuel industries in the Southwest region of the state. Local fishermen who rely on the Calcasieu Lake and surrounding marshes for their livelihoods are accusing Venture Global, the operator of a massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility, of disrupting and damaging the estuary through its dredging operations.
The fishermen say Venture Global's dredging to create a new ship channel for its LNG tankers has resulted in the improper dispersal of sediment, which has spilled outside of permitted areas and smothered oyster beds and crab traps. This has threatened the fishermen's ability to harvest fresh seafood from the waterways.
In early August, state wildlife officials confirmed that a spill of around 15,000 cubic yards of dredged material had spread into Calcasieu Lake, validating the fishermen's concerns. Venture Global initially denied responsibility but later acknowledged the incident. The company claims to have taken steps to contain the problem, but fishermen say they have witnessed additional mud spills in recent weeks that have continued to impact their operations.
Frustrated by the lack of accountability, the fishermen are pressing state and federal regulators to hold Venture Global accountable for the environmental damage. They argue that while they must strictly follow wildlife regulations, the LNG company has not faced the same level of scrutiny. As the dispute continues, the livelihoods of these Louisiana seafood harvesters remain threatened by the ongoing dredging activities.
