Thames Now Fit for Swimming: London's River Reclaims Its Purity
13 Feb
Summary
- London's River Thames could become a designated bathing site for the first time.
- Thirteen new official swimming locations are proposed across England.
- This designation signifies a major improvement in the Thames' water quality.

London's River Thames is set to welcome its first official bathing spot, a landmark achievement in improving water quality. This proposal is among thirteen new designated swimming locations across England.
The Thames' potential new status marks a significant transformation, as the river was once declared biologically dead in the 1950s due to severe pollution. This designation will lead to regular water quality testing, informing the public about safe conditions for swimming and water sports.
This government initiative aims to increase the number of official bathing sites in England to 464. The plans also involve more flexible monitoring dates and an expanded definition of "bather" to include water sports participants.
In 2025, a substantial majority of England's designated bathing sites met excellent or good water quality standards, though 32 sites failed to meet minimum requirements. The proposed new locations, including spots that inspired "The Wind in the Willows" and the filming location for "Broadchurch," are now out for public consultation.
