London Tackles Rat Crisis: New Reporting System Launched

London city hall has expanded its online system to include specific reporting for rat and vermin infestations, a move designed to address a growing rodent issue city-wide. This enhancement to the Service London portal allows for closer monitoring of infestation reports, aligning with recent council directives.

The city's strategy emphasizes reducing the resources available to rodents, including food, water, and shelter. Updated Yard and Lot Maintenance Bylaw and Property Standards Bylaw provisions aim to decrease the time for compliance in cases of debris accumulation that could harbor infestations.

Residents are experiencing significant problems, with one Glen Cairn resident detailing a severe infestation since the pandemic. Concerns have also been raised about illegally dumped garbage attracting vermin around communal dumpsters in townhouse complexes.

Looking ahead, city staff will propose a residential rat remediation rebate program before the end of this year. This comprehensive approach aims to tackle the issue from multiple angles, including citizen reporting and bylaw enforcement.
