Waters in Liberty Bay, spanning areas from Poulsbo to Keyport, are now under a no-contact advisory due to a significant sewage spill. The Kitsap Public Health District issued the warning after approximately 17,000 gallons of sewage were released into the waterway. This incident occurred near the junction of Brownsville Highway and Keyport on Friday, June 19.
The no-contact advisory prohibits all recreational water activities where swallowing or exposure to the mouth, nose, or eyes could occur. It also advises avoiding skin contact with the water. Signs detailing the warning are posted at public access points.
A separate shellfish advisory remains in effect, specifically warning against the harvesting of clams and oysters along the shorelines within the affected zone. This shellfish warning is scheduled to continue through July 9.
The advisory encompasses a broad area of Liberty Bay. On the north shore, boundaries extend from Fjord Drive NE and NE Tidal View Way. It reaches across the bay to the north end of Thorpe Road NE near Scandia. The western limit extends to where Liberty Bay connects to the Port Orchard Narrows and Agate Passage.
