A leopardess succumbed during a rescue operation in Piparia village, located in the buffer zone of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Kheri district. The incident occurred on Monday after the animal had entered a thatched wheat straw store the previous night.
Forest personnel attempted a rescue by surrounding the structure, but the leopardess remained unusually inactive. Unlike typical aggressive behavior, she showed no reaction when approached and collapsed before sedation could be administered.
Veterinary officers conducted a post-mortem, finding no external or internal injuries. Samples have been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute for examination, with canine distemper suspected as a possible cause.
This is the third big cat death in Kheri district recently. A tigress died on June 23, and an adult male tiger was found dead on June 29.
