A three-year-old female leopard was safely captured by the forest department on Saturday morning at the Puranimati tea estate in Jorhat. This capture brings relief to residents who had been living in fear for several days due to the leopard's presence.
The leopard had been actively preying on livestock, including goats and poultry, belonging to local farmers and tea garden workers. The repeated losses and the animal's unchecked roaming had significantly heightened anxiety among the villagers, particularly concerning venturing out after dark.
Following persistent distress calls from the community, the forest department strategically placed an iron cage with live bait on June 27. After nearly a week, the leopard was found trapped. Officials noted the animal was agitated and had sustained minor head injuries, which will be treated during a medical examination. Once cleared, it will be released into a safe, distant forest habitat.
