29 Apr
Summary
- Massive illegal waste dumping discovered at a protected Leicestershire site.
- Approximately 30,000 tonnes of shredded waste were covered with soil.
- A criminal investigation is underway to address the environmental damage.

An extensive investigation has commenced concerning the "sickening" large-scale dumping of waste at a protected Leicestershire site. Residents near Cave's Inn Pits reported unpleasant odors emanating from the well-concealed location, a designated site of special scientific interest.
Environment Agency and Natural England officers visited the site last week, uncovering approximately 30,000 tonnes of shredded waste. This material was layered and covered with soil across an area equivalent to a football pitch in an attempt to conceal the operation.
Efforts are currently underway to mitigate the impact of this extensive dumping on local wildlife. Alongside these environmental recovery actions, a criminal investigation has been initiated to hold those responsible accountable for this significant environmental violation.
