Leamington is transitioning to biweekly garbage collection, a significant change set to take effect in January 2027. This decision by the town council means regular household garbage will be picked up every two weeks, a shift from the current weekly service. This move is anticipated to save Leamington residents an estimated $1.6-million over the duration of a six-year contract with Miller Waste Systems.
The town is also embracing environmental initiatives by introducing weekly green bin collection for organic waste starting in November. Leamington will join Amherstburg and Kingsville in Phase 2 of the regional Green Bin program, a move supported by council members who highlighted the program's success in diverting waste from landfills. The town of Tecumseh is also scheduled to adopt biweekly garbage collection in February 2027.
Council members expressed a forward-thinking approach, acknowledging potential challenges for some residents but emphasizing the long-term benefits for future generations. They pointed to other municipalities like Guelph, which has operated similar programs for 30 years, and Windsor, which transitioned to biweekly collection in October 2025, as examples of successful waste management strategies. The organic waste collected will be processed into liquid fertilizer at Seacliff Energy in Leamington.
