26 Oct
Summary
- A motocross track closed due to health complaints from dust and odors.
- Residents report headaches, dizziness, and nausea from landfill emissions.
- The Environment Agency is investigating the landfill's impact on public health.
A local motocross track has ceased operations due to pervasive dust and odors emanating from a nearby landfill, a situation described as a health hazard by residents and operators alike. The facility, located in Finningley, near Doncaster, has caused riders and children to experience symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, prompting the closure of Doncaster Motoparc, which has operated for 35 years.
Office manager Karen Aitken stated that the issues began in May, with riders unable to breathe properly. A local farmer also raised concerns about dust from the landfill, particularly when bulldozers are in operation. The smell from the site, operated by Tetron Finningley Ltd, has been carried over residential areas, leading to complaints about the air quality.
The Environment Agency has confirmed it is actively investigating these complaints. An inspector visited the motocross park, and the agency stated that appropriate regulatory action would be taken if any environmental permit violations are discovered. The landfill's permit was amended in 2022 to allow the acceptance of hazardous asbestos.
